Choosing a Computer Networks Practical Lab for Your College.

Packet Tracer, IIT Virtual Labs, a traditional physical lab, and HackTheFort — where each one actually fits.

If your department teaches Computer Networks, you already have options: Cisco Packet Tracer, IIT Virtual Labs, your existing physical lab, maybe a self-managed GNS3 or EVE-NG setup. None of them are wrong. The question worth asking isn’t which one is best — it’s which one fits what you’re actually trying to deliver this semester.

The comparison

Cisco Packet Tracer is free for Networking Academy instructors, students and alumni, and remains one of the strongest simulation tools for learning core networking concepts without hardware. IIT Virtual Labs, coordinated by IIT Delhi under the Ministry of Education, is a free, publicly available collection of simulation-based experiments. Both are genuinely strong in the areas they cover — the comparison below is about scope and delivery model, not quality.

When each one actually makes sense

Use Packet Tracerwhen simulation is what the learning objective needs — visualising topologies, practising configuration commands, understanding protocol behaviour without provisioning real hosts.

Use IIT Virtual Labswhen an existing experiment in its catalogue already matches your learning objective and you don’t need it mapped to your specific cohort or timetable.

Use a traditional physical labwhen hands-on hardware experience — cabling, rack-and-stack, physical fault-finding — is itself the learning outcome, and your department can absorb the maintenance overhead.

Use HackTheFortwhen the department wants a managed, curriculum-aligned practical environment across a full student cohort, with repeatable resets between batches and faculty visibility into who actually did the work — without a self-managed GNS3/EVE-NG setup or building that visibility by hand.

Most departments end up using more than one of these at different points in the syllabus. HackTheFort isn’t trying to replace Packet Tracer for concept visualisation — it’s built for the practical, assessed, cohort-scale part of the semester where a department needs to know that every student did the work, not just that the tool exists.
